In 1998 I decided to embark on what was going to turn out as a life changing journey to Poland. After seeing Spielberg's Schindler's List, I was left with a profound emptiness, and a need to contribute to Holocaust, and genocide in general, awareness.

Being a part time commercial photographer, it was easy to channel my perspective on things towards this page in history. I temporarily, or so I thought, put commercial work on hold to study the Holocaust and develop a project.

I read witness, and survivor accounts, but none gave me the emotional connection I was looking for. It was through Holocaust poetry that I was able to connect. I decided to photograph Nazi extermination camps from the perspective of the victims. I am told I have a gift of empathy. That gift would prove to be emotionally costly; a small price compared to the suffering and loss of life of so many.

In the gallery are images taken that year. Over the next period of time, I will continue to add images taken and extracts from my journal.

In memory of the millions of victims of the Holocaust.
May we never forget.
